The MICROpod is a GNSS Receiver system that provides an interface to a range of NovAtel’s OEM6 GNSS receivers and adds the enhancement of a processor for bespoke applications.

MICROpod User Manual v4.00

The MICROpod consists of:

  • Up to 2 NovAtel OEM6 GNSS Receivers or a Rockwell Collins MPE GNSS Receiver.
  • FSL processor for bespoke applications and use cases (EDGE-WARE)

The unit has a robust and waterproof enclosure perfect for operating in harsh environments. There are up to 10 serial, 3 USB and 2 CAN channels available to allow different sensors to be integrated. Example applications have included; emulation of eight stand-alone GNSS receivers, sub 10 nanosecond time synchronisation of LIDAR, EO/IR cameras, 3rd party INS, 20-ship data communications, pulse train generation for coded equipment operations, precision velocity measurement, etc…

CAN Frame output

The MICROpod provides fully functional CAN bus messaging from the OEM6 series of NovAtel’s high performance GNSS receivers. Included with the new interface protocol is a PC based command interpreter, which enables CAN configuration on the MICROpod. Once configured the MICROpod will operate without intervention. The CAN interface is for up to two OEM6 receivers via 2 x CAN ports with data rates of up to 1Mbit per second and can be integrated with an IMU or as part of MICROpod-HDG.

IMU Integration and Inertial Navigation

The MICROpod can interface with a range of IMU options providing NovAtel’s SPAN capabilities resulting in continuous operation during GNSS outages with accurate position and attitude measurements. Accuracy levels are related to the length of outage period.

GNSS Heading

Introduced with the MICROpod-HDG solution. Heading information is required for a number of applications where it is essential in generating distance and bearing information for a moving object. By using one or more ‘Remote’ receivers and a ‘Master’ receiver the heading feature is designed for use in environments where users require relative directional heading of a vessel/body, the separation heading between two vessels/bodies, or heading information with moving base line and pointing applications. Possible features include machine control, collision avoidance and unmanned vehicles.

Full Attitude data through GNSS

By linking a MICROpod and MICROpod-HDG together (total of three GNSS Receivers) an affordable and accurate pitch, heading and roll system is produced. A second option using MICROpod-ATT can be used to control heading drift on any NovAtel or 3rd party inertial navigation system.

Train Control Network Compliant

MICROpod-TCN has been specifically developed for the Train Control Network (TCN) providing IEC61375 compliant GNSS (GPS and Glonass option) position, velocity and time measurements.

The system has been tested to EN50155 standards to ensure that it is ready for integration into existing train control systems. MICROpod provides the latest in GNSS technology with firmware upgrades ensuring that the system can be easily tailored to meet requirements. It is enhanced further with FSL’s EDGE-SPD firmware module providing velocity accuracies better than 0.2 km/h (0.05m/s).

MICROpod is compliant IEC61375 standard to the provide data over the MVB data bus and provides other I/O options including RS232/422, USB, CAN, PPS. The system is further enhanced with NAVpak GNSS software suite to monitor system operation and integrity.

MICROpod-TCN has been delivered and linked to projects involving traction control, sanding and greasing systems.

Aerial Infrastructure Inspection (2014)

Enabling the rapid collection of inspection data over several hundred kilometres of rail network using optical imagery to provide precise location information.

Surface Tracking System (2009)

The requirement to track surface vessels moving within a 20km area to support an underwater tracking operation. While acoustic and surface tracking have been available for twenty years we were asked to replace and update the GNSS element.
